EAB brown bag

Today, I attended the monthly brown bag at the Milwaukee County Extension offices.

The topic was Emerald Ash Borer (Agrilus planipennis).

The presenters were Robert Tomesh and Phil Pellitteri.

They offered a summary of the problem and some possible remedies in terms of insecticidal treatments.

The outlook remains bleak, similar to the Dutch Elm Disease and Chestnut Blight disasters.

They recommended three websites to keep up with developments:

What is most frustrating to me is that we did not learn our lessons from the previous episodes. Too many communities that were particularly hard hit by the Dutch Elm Disease replaced elms with only ash trees rather than a diversity of trees.

How many times are we going to repeat this mistake?

No more pictures

I called Cabela's this morning and they told me to ship the scout camera to Bushnell so it went out today.

No more pictures until they either fix it or ship me a replacement.

Very disappointing.

Christmas cactus

Only 6 pictures on the camera, including 3 of this Christmas cactus that I took on manual mode in the kitchen.

This cactus already bloomed once before Christmas, went into a rest period, and now is blooming again. This is the first time we have ever had a repeat bloom like this.

The camera seems to have died. It would not go into setup mode when I brought it in today. Will have to make the long drive out to Cabela's to see if they can figure it out.

The View from the Garden

Only 3 pictures on the camera this morning (all 3 from yesterday afternoon).

Obviously, whatever triggered the camera moved away and avoided having its picture taken.

Last night we got a very sticky snow that coated the camera and prevented any additional pictures.

Major disappointment.

Rabbit in the garden

96 pictures on the camera today, most of them are of me hauling tree trimmings.

A burst of three night pictures featuring a rabbit. I am surprised that we have any rabbits since we have foxes and coyotes around.

No pictures of the opossum from dusk yesterday, even though it was in the vicinity of the camera. Does the opossum move so slowly that it does not trigger the camera?

This is either our third or fourth year on this amaryllis.

Night in the garden

21 pictures on the camera today, 3 were night pictures like this one.

I would dearly love to know what triggered them.

There was an opossum in the garden just before dusk, maybe it somehow caused the camera to shoot without actually being captured.

Gil in the garden

Too many pictures of humans, not enough of exotic creatures.

Fox in the garden

30 pictures on the camera today, no night pictures, and none of the opossum that was in the backyard yesterday at dusk.

The time/date stamp on the pictures is wrong again. No matter how many times I reset it, it just will not hold.

If my conversion is correct, this fox was in the garden this morning just after 10am, while I was out running errands at the bank and hardware.

There was an opossum in the back yard just before dusk today.

It will be interesting to see if it walks in front of the camera.

It was far from the camera when I saw it.

9 pictures on the camera today, no night pictures.

Coyote near the garden

There was a coyote just across the south line at 4:50 this afternoon.

It was running west like it was on a mission.

And of course it was behind the camera.

After the blizzard

The squirrels prefer to travel tree-to-tree rather than plow through the deep snow.

If it was just the snow, there should have been many more shots like this because it snowed for many hours.

Raccoon before a blizzard

This seems to be a tradition in the garden.

The night before a blizzard there is often a raccoon foraging in the garden.

A measly 15 pictures on the scout camera today, and no night pictures.

Only 2 pictures on the scout camera, both of them triggered when I went out to get the camera.

Very strange, since there are fresh squirrel tracks in the snow in front of the camera.

The camera obviously works, so I might have to fine tune the settings again.

Very disappointing not to get any night shots.
