I added a couple of dozen small fathead minnows to my garden pool today.

    What keeps your garden pool from becoming a garden ice cube?

    This morning it was -5 (F).

    Even at that cold temperature, the copious amounts of water gushing forth from the sump keep the pool open except for a rim of ice around the edge.
